This is interesting because, currently, Polestar is kind of to Volvo what AMG is to Mercedes: the two create sportier and more powerful performance versions of the automaker's regular cars. According to the report, the first model could be shown sometime this year. CMA will form the basis of new smaller Volvos, including the new 40-series models: the XC40, S40 and V40. Geely wants to give Polestar the same treatment, including Polestar branded cars, similar to AMG's GT S Coupe.
What we do know is, the future is electric, and Volvo, together with Polestar have their eyes set on the market share now held by Tesla.
Rumours suggest that the as-yet unnamed Polestar electric auto will use a tweaked and tuned version of a new all-electric powertrain that's soon due to be introduced to the S90 and V90 range. It wants to replicate what Mercedes' AMG brand has done in producing its own bespoke AMG cars as well as modified Mercedes-AMG models.
To that end, Geely sees Volvo as its luxury brand, and its new LYNX & CO brand is aimed at the mainstream in most of the global market.
