On Sunday night, after Sidney Crosby lifted the Stanley Cup for the second consecutive year and for the third time in his career, Penguins owner Mario Lemieux was asked on NBCSN if he ever saw this kind of success coming for the Penguins captain, back when Crosby was a rookie and living in Lemieux's house.
Country music star Luke Bryan opened NBC's Game 6 broadcast of the Stanley Cup Final at 8 p.m. ET with a special performance from the rooftop of Tootsie's World Famous Orchid Lounge in Nashville, Tenn., and joined McHugh, Milbury, and Jones during first intermission coverage. The Penguins would later add an empty-net goal to win the game 2-0 and the series 4-2. The Penguins topped the Predators by a final score of 2-0 and won their fifth Stanley Cup in the history of the franchise.
The Penguins defeated the Nashville Predators on Sunday to win the Stanley Cup, with Pittsburgh topping all markets when it came to television ratings for the championship series. He played brilliantly in this season's playoffs, scoring 27 points in 24 games, including 7 in six games during the Final, and earning a second consecutive Smythe. Crosby, Evgeni Malkin and Phil Kessel all put up at least two points each in that game.
Those numbers aren't direct comparisons, though, because the two played in different eras when the game was played differently.
"Sidney Crosby had the Cup and [assistant coach] Rick Tocchet was with my phone, but he forgot to push the record button", said Torres, who later got the video evidence on his phone with Penguins assistant general manager Bill Guerin holding the Stanley Cup while Torres drank from it. Crosby is a 2016-17 finalist for the Hart Trophy. The last time that trifecta was achieved was back in '87, when Edmonton's Wayne Gretzky was the top goal scorer and the Oilers led the league in offense on their way to the championship. With a roster heavy on players 27 and younger, many of who are under contract for several years, the roster is not likely to undergo significant changes. At the age of 22, Guentzel helped surge the top line of the Penguins late in the regular season and throughout the playoffs, leaving many to wonder if he would be given the Conn Smythe Trophy.
May and DUP leader Arlene Foster set for crucial talks
The talks with the DUP follow her apology to Conservative rank-and-file lawmakers in a meeting for the party's poor election result.
Each playoff game starting in the first round saw around 3.5 million fans tune in, an uptick over the last handful of years - and for good reason. "I think there will be more Stanley Cups in their future".
The thing was: how do you win with those guys? You think about that your whole life. That's sport. Like I said, this team never gave up. Five years later, he has twice won the Stanley Cup with the Pens.
Despite several chances and a fast-paced style, the Predators and Penguins played the first scoreless first period of this year's Stanley Cup Final. Half of Murray's victories also ended with a shutout, which led all goaltenders throughout the playoffs.
"He's pretty inspirational when he plays that way and gets to a level that not many guys can get to", veteran Matt Cullen said. One of these players is Zach Aston-Reese, the highly-coveted free agent who signed with the Penguins this spring after producing a ridiculous 63 points in 38 games at Northeastern University. Jason Mackey of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette wrote about what to do with Murray and Fleury this offseason and quoted Murray on what Fleury has meant to him during their time together in Pittsburgh. He scored just two goals in this year's postseason, but both came in the seventh game of the Eastern Conference Final against the Ottawa Senators.
