Lewis - from JSerra Catholic High School in San Juan Capistrano, California - is perhaps the most complete position player in the draft.
Several amateur baseball players realized their childhood dreams on Monday when MLB commissioner Rob Manfred called their names during the 2017 first-year player draft. And clearly the Twins are impressed with the 6-foot-2, 190-pound shortstop too, considering they just selected him with the No. 1 overall pick in the MLB Draft.
The Yankees also selected 18-year-old righty pitcher Matt Sauer (Ernest Righetti High School in Santa Maria, Calif.) with their second-round pick (No. 54 overall). Minnesota also hold the 35th and 37th overall selections.
In a touching moment that drew a standing ovation from the former major leaguers serving as team representatives, 11-year-old Yankees fan Landis Sims - born without hands or feet - announced his favourite team's first-round selection: SC right-hander Clarke Schmidt at No. 16 overall. "I can't imagine what's going through an 18-year-old's brain right now, but he just wants to go out and have fun, and he makes this baseball field his playground".
The record signing bonus for a Twins draftee is the $6 million they gave high school outfielder Byron Buxton as the No. 2 overall pick in 2012.
This year, Greene has been ranked the No. 1 draft prospect by both MLB.com's Top 200 Draft Prospects and Baseball America's Top 200 MLB Draft Prospects.

High-profile recruit Durant was the difference as the Warriors wrapped up a 4-1 series triumph on home court in Oakland . JR Smith added 25 points and seven 3-pointers. " You got to want to put your teammates in front of yourself sometimes".
His junior year he hit a.429 batting average with nine doubles and four home runs. "We got to know him very deeply and he'll be a big part of our future".
The first college player selected was Louisville first baseman/left-hander Brendan McKay, who went fourth overall to the Tampa Bay Rays.
"I just treat everyone equally", Lewis said. Most draft pundits agree that Greene appears to be the top talent in the draft, but it's been over 20 years since a high school pitcher (most prefer Greene's pitching to his hitting) has been taken with the top pick.
"I think he understands that he's in a really good spot", said Kay. UC Irvine second baseman Keston Hiura went ninth to Milwaukee even though he was limited to DH duties this season and is expected to have surgery once he signs. With the tools to play shortstop or center field at the next level, Lewis is an elite, projectable athlete with makeup that scores off the boards with scouts know know him best.
Lewis played shortstop at JSerra and could also project as an outfielder. Rounds 3-10 will begin at 1:00 p.m. tomorrow, and Rounds 11-40 will begin at noon Wednesday.
