John McCain has questioned the president on many issues and just this weekend said American leadership was better under former President Barack Obama.
McCain offered a withering assessment of Trump's diplomacy when asked about what message the tweet sent to the UK.
"I think it's reaching a point where it's of 'Watergate size and scale, ' and a couple of other scandals that you and I have seen. If I did I was joking". Trump drew condemnation across the British political spectrum after attacking London Mayor Sadiq Khan on Twitter in the wake of the London Bridge terrorist attack. "The message is that America doesn't want to lead", he replied.
The US president took the London mayor's comment out of context and tweeted: "At least seven dead and 48 wounded in terror attack and mayor of London says there is "no reason to be alarmed!"
You'd be forgiven for thinking that John McCain, a Republican senator would be supportive of President Trump given their shared party alliance.
AG Rosenstein sees no reason to fire Mueller
Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein said Tuesday that the Justice Department has heard back so far from three. She asked whether he has seen "any evidence of good cause" to fire Mueller.
But McCain's wife may be taking a different, more subtle tack on reforming a hapless foreign policy: working to improve the situation from the inside.
The president had previously discussed the prospect of an administration position with Cindy McCain several times, including during a White House dinner Trump hosted for the McCains in April.
McCain, the chairman on the Senate Armed Services Committee, lost to Obama in the 2008 presidential election and was highly critical of his administration's foreign policy agenda. When asked if the country's global standing was better off under Obama than it is under Trump.
In response, the London Mayor called on the Government to cancel Mr Trump's planned state visit.
The world was "not sure of American leadership, whether it be in Siberia or whether it be in Antarctica", he told The Guardian.
