Qatar asks United Nations body to resolve Gulf airspace row

The NHRC said in a statement on Sunday that a hotline set up by Saudi Arabia, the UAE and Bahrain to assist mixed Qatari families who faced the prospect of deportation and expulsion was "too vague to have any practical impact" and was "void of a mechanism to be of assistance to those affected".

"The US sees Hamas as a terror organization, but to the rest of the Arab nations it is a legitimate resistance movement", Al-Thani said during a visit to Russian Federation.

Meanwhile, Qatari foreign minister Sultan Bin Saad al-Muraikhi arrived in Mogadishu on Sunday, where he met with Farmaajo to discuss the escalating affairs in the region.

Qatar has denied the charges and said the restrictions violate global law.

Many people in Qatar flocked to local supermarkets and grocery stores to stock up on food items after waking up to news of Saudi Arabia closing the country's only land border.

Qatar Airways also stopped its flights to the four Arab countries in response to the UAE's Etihad, Emirates, FlyDubai, EgyptAir and Bahrain's Gulf Air suspending flights to Qatar.

Qatar is still waiting for specific demands from the Saudi-led bloc that has severed ties with the tiny Gulf state, and therefore sees no basis yet for a diplomatic solution, Foreign Minister Mohammed Al Thani said.

A six-member Qatari delegation had reportedly visited Islamabad last week to relay a message from the Qatari emir, asking Pakistan to play a positive role in resolving the diplomatic crisis engulfing the Middle East, Dawn reported.

The countries involved in the dispute accused Qatar of supporting the Islamic State militant group (ISIS); Qatar responded by pointing out that it is part of the US -led coalition fighting ISIS in Syria.

Back on June 5, the head of Iran's Agricultural Products Exporters Union Reza Noorani said the Islamic Republic is ready to export various types of agricultural and food products to Qatar through three Iranian port cities. Sheikh Hamad used revenue from the natural gas to pursue a diplomatic path away from Saudi Arabia, long the heavyweight among Gulf countries.

Qatar's Central Bank said yesterday banking transactions at home and overseas were continuing normally despite the diplomatic crisis which has seen several Gulf countries sever ties with the emirate.

USA dollar shortages hit currency exchange houses in Qatar, making it hard for foreign workers to send money home. Duty free sales at Doha airport are also suffering - they fell 25% in the past week, said Al Baker.
