Uber is acting fast after an investigation substantiated multiple reports of sexual harassment at the company, CNN reports. Overall Perkins Coie reviewed 215 claims of alleged misconduct, leading to the 20 firings.

Another 31 employees, whose behavior was considered inappropriate but not egregious enough for terminations are in counseling or training. Investigators already needed extra time for a deeper probe of Uber's work culture, and of the 12,000 full-time employees there, Bloomberg reports that more than 200 claims were investigated.

In addition to its review of human-resources claims, Uber tapped former Attorney General Eric Holder to conduct an internal investigation. Their report was completed at the end of May and has been shared with a subcommittee of the Uber board of directors, a company representative said. The person who initially confirmed the news for The Washington Post was familiar with Uber's action and spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss a sensitive matter not yet announced publicly by the company. And the company's image has been further tarnished by a string of negative reports about its business practices, such as its use of a special tool created to help Uber evade regulators.

These include allegations of sexual harassment, a video of CEO Travis Kalanick berating an Uber driver, a legal battle with Google over the alleged theft of driverless vehicle technology, the revelation that Uber used secret "Greyball" software to deceive city regulators, and allegations that the company had another program called "Hell" created to spy on its arch-rival Lyft. After that, said Wilson, "we made recommendations to the company and they abided by them".

The day after Fowler's claims came to light, Uber created an anonymous hotline for staff to report incidents of sexual harassment, discrimination, bullying and unprofessional behaviour.

Most complaints were filed by employees at Uber's headquarters in San Francisco.

As a result of the investigation, the company fired 20 employees. Those cases were referred to Perkins Coie to further investigate and resolve, leading to the firings outlined in Tuesday's staff meeting. Morton says, he's seen a lot of large companies with HR problems similar to Uber. Initially, the company had expected to make a public announcement this week, but that timing has been pushed back.
