Former chancellor George Osborne predicted that Mrs May could be forced out of No 10 within a matter of days, saying she was "dead woman walking".
"I am backing Theresa May". Goodwin scrunched up a piece of paper and uncomfortably shoved it into his mouth and said: "It is actually a hardback, there are lots of chemicals but I have got to get through the whole thing". Corbyn believes that there is enough opposition in the rest of the House of Commons, and even amongst Conservative MPs, to defeat the government and trigger another election. Instead, she has left Britain's position in disarray, days before the divorce negotiations are due to start on June 19.
In Thursday's election the Conservatives won 318 of the 650 House of Commons seats, 12 fewer than the party had before the snap election, and eight short of the 326 needed for an outright majority.
Labour had been expected to sustain heavy losses but the results vindicated Mr Corbyn's heavily maligned leadership after the party put in its best performance in years, winning a total of 262 seats. However, he said changes would be made, referring to the resignations of May's joint chiefs of staff, and that a "more collective approach" had been agreed with cabinet ministers. "I just don't see how she can continue in any long-term way".
The Conservatives are not seeking a formal coalition with the DUP but an agreement that the Northern Irish party would support them on "big issues" such as the economy and security, Michael Fallon has said. "Discussions will continue next week to work on the details and to reach agreement on arrangements for the new parliament", it said.
Then, after midnight, Downing Street responded, saying: "The Prime Minister has tonight spoken with the DUP to discuss finalising a confidence and supply deal when Parliament returns next week".
"The Conservatives have not yet broken the British system of democracy, but through their hubris and incompetence they have managed to make a mockery of it", it said in an editorial.
Many critics, including Scottish Conservative leader Ruth Davidson, have expressed concerns over the socially conservative DUP's stances against gay marriage and abortion, among other issues.

A visibly relaxed Corbyn, asked whether he would be in his own job over the long term, joked that "I've got youth on my side". Newspapers said foreign minister Boris Johnson and other leading party members were weighing leadership challenges.
Conservative lawmaker Nicky Morgan told ITV that she could support a confidence and supply arrangement with the DUP, but any closer deal would be "a step too far".
But the wooing of the DUP risks upsetting the political balance in Northern Ireland by aligning London more closely with the pro-British side in the divided province, where a power-sharing government with Irish nationalists is now suspended.
But after a poor campaign and an unexpectedly stiff challenge from Labour, her plan went disastrously wrong, leaving her unable to form a sustainable government without DUP support.
Timothy and Hill had worked for May when she was interior minister, before she became premier in July a year ago in the chaotic days that followed the Brexit vote.
Corbyn said Labour would try to amend the Queen's Speech to include its own commitments to end austerity and boost public spending. Without the amendments, he said Labour would try to vote down the speech.
A buoyant Jeremy Corbyn, however, says in an interview with the Sunday Mirror: "I can still be Prime Minister".
Jeremy Corbyn vowed to lead Britain out of the European Union as he insisted Labour is "ready any time" for another general election.
