In an interview on ABC News' "This Week," Bharara said Trump called him during the presidential transition "just to shoot the breeze", and described the calls as "a little bit uncomfortable" considering the United States attorney's mandate to remain impartial toward subjects within his jurisdiction, which included Trump.
Comey testified Thursday that he leaked a conversation of Trump hoping that Comey would back off an investigation into ex-National Security Adviser Michael Flynn, in hopes of prompting the appointment of a special counsel to take over the Russian Federation investigation. Bharara was notably fired along with a slew of other US Attorneys when Trump took over the White House, which raised eyebrows given that Trump had reportedly told Bharara that he would be staying in that role.
Bharara attended the Comey hearing.
Preet Bharara told ABC's "This Week" that he thinks Trump was trying to "cultivate some kind of relationship" with him.
"It's a very weird and peculiar thing for a one-on-one conversation without the attorney general, without warning, between the president and me, or any United States attorney who has been asked to investigate various things", Bharara said.
In all, Trump telephoned Bharara three times between December and March, the ex-prosecutor said Sunday.

After the election but before the inauguration, Trump asked Bharara to stay on as USA attorney in Manhattan when they met at Trump Tower.
