The statement was released hours after former FBI Director James Comey gave blockbuster testimony on alleged efforts by the president to influence the investigation into Russia's suspected meddling. Comey accused Trump of firing him to try to undermine the bureau's investigation into possible collusion between his 2016 presidential campaign team and Russian Federation.

In referring to Comey, Trump was citing the former Federal Bureau of Investigation director's acknowledgment that he had asked a friend to leak his memos about his conversations with the president.

In an early morning tweet on Friday, Trump said he has been "vindicated" by the Comey hearing. Think of that. I hardly know the man. "He's a leaker", he said of Comey. "There were things Comey said in his testimony that were not true".

Trump had raised the possibility that his conversations with Comey were recorded in a May 12 tweet he sent several days after he fired him.

"The President tweeted on Friday, after I got fired, that I better hope there's not tapes", Comey testified.

Comey testified he had nine one-on-one conversations with Trump - and detailed each in memos just after they met for fear that the president would subsequently lie about their interactions.

The former FBI director also appeared to confirm Trump's statements that, on three occasions, Comey told the president he was not personally under investigation with regard to Russian Federation.
