North Korea confirmed on Friday that its Thursday missile launch was successful and was aimed at testing a new cruise anti-ship missile, the state KCNA news agency reported.
Officials in North Korea say they tested out a new type of cruise missile during a series of four launches on Thursday.
Roh Jae-cheon, spokesman of Seouls military, said the latest launch would have meant to show off its widening arrange of missiles and also its precision strike capabilities on ships in response to the joint drills.
Pyongyang launched what appeared to be several land-to-sea missiles early on Thursday off its east coast, which flew about 200 km (124 miles), South Korea's military said.
The missile test was North Korea's fourth in the span of a month, and comes after the United Nations Security Council imposed new sanctions on Kim's government last week.
The EU said it would freeze the assets of 14 more people and ban their travel to Europe in line with a UN Security Council resolution last week for more sanctions over Pyongyang's ballistic missile tests.
The United Nations reported a year ago that the North has around 300 drones, although other reports suggest that North Korea could have as many as 1,000 drones in its arsenal. U.S. President Donald Trump said that he will not allow North Korea to gain the capability of striking the United States with a nuclear tipped ICBM.
Washington says it is willing to enter into talks with Pyongyang, but only if it halts its missile and nuclear tests. "South Korea will face large-scale sanctions from their main trading partner which is not what they want", he said, warning Beijing could tighten the screws further if they wanted to.
Police identifies third attacker of London attack
Pakistan-born Khuram Butt , 27, and Rachid Radouane, 30, both from Barking, east London , were the other two attackers. The trio killed eight and injured 48 in their rampage around London Bridge and Borough Market on Saturday night.
US ally South Korea said on Wednesday it would hold off on installing remaining elements of the THAAD system, which China strongly objects to, until the environmental study was completed.
South Korea discovered a suspected North Korean drone on a mountain near its shared border Friday, according to the military, that believes the device was conducting reconnaissance.
North Korea's weapons tests are meant to build a nuclear and missile program that can stand up to what it sees as US and South Korean hostility, but they are also considered by outside analysts as ways to make its political demands clear to leaders in Washington and Seoul.
The history of the alliance, however, will compel the presidents of South Korea and the United States to listen carefully to each other in an effort at coordinating closely on North Korea as on other issues.
The latest launch is thought to have featured anti-ship cruise missiles that would not present a direct threat to the Japanese mainland.
Speaking about the North Korean settlement, she said: "We hope that in the future there will be negotiations, but far from it".
High ranking officials with ties to China in North Korea have been executed by Kim, sometimes with packs of dogs, sometimes with anti-aircraft guns.
"This is the beginning of what will undoubtedly be a long process to get North Korea to come to the realization that its provocative actions [are] destabilizing not just for the region", the spokeswoman said.
