Apple's 'HomePod' speaker to take on Amazon, Google

Google, Tesla, Uber, and others have been testing self-driving vehicles on public roadways for several years; Apple received its first permit to begin testing just two months ago.

Apple has introduced the HomePod, a voice-controlled speaker that will help carry out small tasks for the user such as turning on the light or increasing the temperature. Research company eMarketer puts its share of the market at 70.6%, compared to 23.8% for Alphabet's (GOOGL) Google. Where Apple is really focusing on differentiating the HomePod is in pure audio quality. Consultancy company Strategy Analytics forecasts that the market for smart home systems, which comprises hardware, software, and services, will hit $90.0 billion in 2017 and grow to $155.0 billion by 2022. Considering both Amazon and Google smart speakers are available in the market for a lot longer, they offer greater functionality which ranges from ordering a pizza to calling a cab or even reading out recipes! By saying, "Hey Siri, I like this song", HomePod and Apple Music become the flawless musicologist, learning preferences from hundreds of genres and moods, across tens of thousands of playlists, and these music tastes are shared across devices. David Limp, Amazon's Senior VP of devices and the person in charge of Alexa and the Echos, also said that he would like to see Siri and Alexa "talk to each other" and cooperate.

Second, Limp argued people have varied tastes in speakers, so Amazon made it easy for customers to pair an Echo with your high-end home entertainment system. But while supposedly superior sound is all well and good, at $349 HomePod will cost around twice what you'd pay for an Amazon Echo ($179), and about three times the price of Google Home ($109 at a slight discount).

The specs of the HomePod certainly reinforce this idea - the Apple-designed sub woofer inside the speaker is paired with an A8 chip (from the iPhone 6).

Amazon basically created the smart speaker market by selling around 10 million Alexa devices to date.

Siri is still lagging behind rival intelligent assistants, say former Apple employees who worked on the project, despite the latest enhancements announced at WWDC.

Senior Russian Lawmaker Believes UK Election Results Could Delay Brexit
The Prime Minister has refused to quit despite her disastrous election night as the United Kingdom voted for a hung parliament . Parties can also have what's called a "working majority", which means having more seats than the other parties, plus one.

HomePod, on the other hand, limits you to the same Siri integrations that Apple has always had.

With consumers less interested in buying new tablets, Apple has increased its focus on designing tablets for professionals to do much of the same work that they usually perform on a laptop computer.

Safari now has extensions that can help block site trackers and autoplaying videos, and will also be almost 80% faster than Chrome (as claimed by Craig Federighi, Apple's VP of Software Engineering). Siri on iOS only got third-party extensions a year ago, and developer options there are still extremely limited in what Apple will allow devs to build, despite the fact that Siri beat nearly every other digital assistant to market. The speaker will be operated on Siri, Apple's voice technology. This is Apple's first shot at a device that could potentially manage your home and embed itself into your life in a way your smartphone can't - and in that respect - it underwhelms.

At this rate, you have to wonder if that's exactly where Apple might stay.

Right now it looks like the only way the HomePod makes sense is if you're so deeply entrenched in Apple Music and the iOS ecosystem that Apple's services are already the only ones you use.

About a year after Mr. Jobs's death, Apple hired Bill Stasior, an Amazon search executive, to oversee Siri.
