It is now too late to post your ballot, instead you should return your postal vote in person to the polling station or to the Returning Officer at your local council before they close.

After registering to vote, you should have received a polling card addressed to you through the door.

Polling stations all over the United Kingdom are open from 7am until 10pm on Thursday, with the results being declared overnight and throughout Friday.

Photographing yourself, or anybody else, is a potential breach of Section 66 of the Representation of the People Act 1983 if it indicates how a person has voted, or records the unique identification number on a ballot paper.

Can I still vote if I've lost my card?

Launching the findings, Dan Howdle, consumer telecoms analyst at Cable.co.uk, said it was "somewhat shocking that so many with no plans to vote would do so if it saved them a short trip to the nearest polling station".

A spokesman for the National Counter Terrorism Policing headquarter said security around polling stations "is constantly reviewed and updated" by local police forces.

You do not need your polling card!

But however you find out where you must vote (polling stations are assigned, so you can't walk into one during your lunch break because you work nearby), don't hang about. Once you've done that, your vote is cast and can not be replaced. Other than who to vote for, of course.

Signing your ballot paper - Some people occasionally sign their ballots but if the name is identifiable your vote will not count. Staff at the booth will ask them to sign a declaration confirming their assistance.

Although the deadline to to register for a regular proxy vote has passed, voters can apply for an emergency one up to 5pm on the day of the poll.
