Pirated Windows is a risky bet, says security company

Unlike other ransomware families, the WannaCry strain does not spread via infected e-mails or infected links. The malware was first detected in March and publicly reported stolen from the NSA a month later.

What is unusual about this ransomware attempt is its scope, its immediacy, and its multi-pronged nature. An official cyber coordination centre is expected to launch operations by June which will take precautions against such attacks.

"In my personal experience, I have come across that most of the ATMs run on customised versions/ embeds of Windows XP or better Windows 7 which came out in 2001 and 2009 respectively".

Those hit by WannaCry also failed to heed warnings past year from Microsoft to disable a file sharing feature in Windows known as SMB, which a covert hacker group calling itself Shadow Brokers had claimed was used by NSA intelligence operatives to sneak into Windows PCs.

Referencing Microsoft ditching support for Windows XP in 2014 - despite the software remaining in widespread public and private use - Omand asked: "Should Microsoft have stopped supporting Windows XP so soon, knowing that institutions had invested heavily in it (at the urging of the company at the time)?"

Trump likely to keep pressure on Iran after Rouhani election win
In exchange, the United States and the European Union would lift sanctions that have crippled the country's economy. Trump is visiting Iran's main regional rivals, Saudi Arabia and Israel, on his first foreign trip.

That raised fears about how quickly a small group of unidentified cybercriminals could wreak havoc on global operations. Speaking about the same, Dinesh Yadav, Centre for Cyber Crime Investigation, Noida told Indian Express, "WannaCry encrypts core system files and the operating system stops functioning". Copycats can also tweak and repurpose the malware to start their own campaigns.

Since increasing numbers of systems running older versions of Windows were affected, Microsoft had made a decision to push an emergency patch for Windows XP and Windows Server 2003, urging users to deploy the patch as soon as possible to limit the impact of WannaCry.

The ransomware was temporarily blocked after its onslaught on Friday, but reports from several countries showed that the first series of attacks could be a start of more risky cyber intrusions. You can see how many computers have been infected here. The ransomware attack will force hundreds of thousands of users of older versions of the Windows operating system to upgrade to recent versions such as Windows 10 Pro - which now retails on the Windows store for a sweet Rs 14,999. The company will notify users via Twitter and Facebook when it becomes available.

Whenever Microsoft learns of vulnerabilities with its operating systems (OS) it releases a Security Update.

To further ensure that your files stay safe, it's highly advisable to back up all essential data, preferably on an external hard drive or some other solution that doesn't involve LAN networks.
