Law enforcement officers from the Missoula County Sheriff's Office at the scene of a high speed chase involving two suspects who allegedly shot and killed a Broadwater County Sheriff's Office Deputy Tuesday morning. After the deputy failed to respond to dispatch, a Gallatin County Sheriff's deputy responded to the scene to find the Broadwater County Deputy shot and killed. The driver of the SUV has been arrested and a passenger was shot by law enforcement and taken to the hospital.

Missoula County Sheriff's Office says a Montana Deputy from Broadwater County has been killed in a shooting Tuesday morning. "The men and women of the Butte-Silver Bow Law Enforcement Department extend our sincerest condolences to Sheriff Meehan, the Broadwater County Sheriff's Department, and the family of the fallen deputy". He is survived by his wife and three children.

"We'll be assisting the state, and we'll go through and try and piece together exactly what happened and how it occurred, collect that evidence, and once we've done that we'll have a better idea of what exactly happened", Gallatin County Sheriff Brian Gootkin said. Our deputy died protecting the citizens of our county and displayed remarkable courage until the very end.

Lewis and Clark Sheriff's Office is handling calls for Broadwater County at this time.

Gootkin said the Gallatin deputy sent to the scene reviewed the dash camera video in the slain officer's auto and identified the SUV, which has California license plates. The vehicle was spike striped at mile marker 162 in Powell County but was able to continue on I-90. The SUV was driving on rims alone when it came to a stop east of Missoula. The passenger, who was identified as Marshall Barrus, 38, was shot in the head and taken to the hospital. His condition has not been released but Missoula County officials said he is in custody.

The driver, Lloyd Barrus, 61, was arrested on suspicion of deliberate homicide.

Lloyd Barrus is being held in the Missoula County jail and is scheduled to appear in court on Wednesday. The names of the officer and the other suspect have not been released.

Butte-Silver Bow officers continued to pursue the vehicle westbound on I-90 through Deer Lodge County and Powell County and into Granite County.
