'Director Comey was compromised': Paul Ryan speaks on former Federal Bureau of Investigation director

President Trump abruptly fired FBI Director James B. Comey on Tuesday, stating that his ouster was required to restore "public trust and confidence" in the FBI.

Russia's alleged involvement in the 2016 presidential election will continue to be investigated, Ryan assured viewers.

Vice President Mike Pence is also defending that decision.

"If there was ever a time when circumstances warranted a special prosecutor, it is right now", said Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, a New York Democrat.

"Due to the Democrats obstructing normal business in the Senate, I have been forced to postpone this afternoon's Crime and Terrorism Subcommittee hearing", Graham said in a statement.

Their job interviews will be with Attorney General Jeff Sessions, and the deputy Attorney General, the pair who recommended Comey be given the boot. At that hearing, Comey answered wide-ranging questions about his controversial handling of the probe into Hillary Clinton's private email server a year ago. "It is not the function of the director to make such an announcement".

Finally, Rosenstein criticized Comey for announcing - on October 28, 11 days before the presidential election - that the FBI was reopening its investigation following the discovery of a cache of new emails on the laptop of a Clinton aide's husband.

Comey's revelation triggered a political natural disaster - which Democrats believe tipped the scales against their candidate - even though the newly-discovered emails turned out to contain nothing of significance.

Reports are emerging the former FBI director asked for more money and manpower for his Russian Federation investigation in the days before he was sacked. Sanders said Trump had been contemplating dismissing Comey since the day he was elected.

The Republican had seized upon Comey's damning assessment of Clinton's "careless" practices as a major line of attack during the campaign.

Trump asked Rosenstein to write a memo outlining his concerns about the Federal Bureau of Investigation director, Sanders said.

What about the Russian Federation probe? Schumer held a press conference Tuesday evening and told reporters that he had a phone conversation with the president prior to Comey's firing, and told Trump that he is "making a big mistake".

Where it leads - and whether it gives rise to any criminal charges - will be determined in large part by who succeeds Comey as director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

An earlier State Department transcript of the meeting between Tillerson and Lavrov, cites the Russian official as saying: "You are kidding" when asked by a reporter whether the firing of former CIA Director would "cast a shadow" over talks between the two. The priority for Congress and the Justice Department must be to restore independence and credibility to that probe as quickly as possible.
