Texas Governor Greg Abbott caused a stir on Monday after signing an order banning the "sanctuary cities" practice of protecting immigrants across the state.
Democrat legislators and left-of-center Texas news outlets claims about the constitutionality of a provision in the law allowing police officers to inquire about the immigration status of someone they have detained drew pointed criticism from the governor.
Local officials had mixed reactions to the sweeping legislation, which legal experts believe is likely to wind up challenged in court.
Demonstrators gathered outside the Governor's Mansion this morning to protest the so-called sanctuary cities ban, which Gov. Greg Abbott signed into law Sunday night.
Under the law, police officers in Texas may ask about a person's immigration status during any legal detention, including a routine traffic stop.
"Elected officials and law enforcement agencies, they don't get to pick and choose which laws they will obey", Abbott said in the video. If a Texas sheriff or other law enforcement authority can not lawfully honor an ICE detainer, risky people will slip through the cracks of the justice system and back into our communities.
Who Won Big at the MTV Movie and TV Awards
Sanders and Jerome received the award for their tender kiss in " Moonlight ", this year's Oscar victor for best picture. Emma said and added that MTV's move to create a genderless award for acting will mean something different to everyone .
"Our law enforcement community could not have been clearer with the legislature: By driving people into hiding, this bill will make it harder to catch criminals, but this bill has never really been about keeping our cities safe".
"The reason why so many people come to America is because we are a nation of laws, and Texas is doing its part to keep it that way", said Abbott. The ban lets police ask during routine stops whether someone is in the USA legally and threatens sheriffs with jail if they don't cooperate with federal immigration agents.
The law requires them to honor federal authorities' requests to hold someone in jail while his or her immigration status is checked out for possible deportation.
The law, which allows for the apprehension and jailing of sheriffs and police chiefs who don't enforce federal immigration laws, was passed by the Texas House of Representatives in April. Adding, "Citizens deserve law breakers to face legal consequences".
Critics of the new law insist it could lead to racial profiling and a lack of trust in law enforcement officials. She said before Abbott signed the new measure that she would conform if it became law. "And by releasing people like the killer of Kate Steinle, they're endangering our streets...that is making our streets more risky". This makes it equally hard to say just how Governor Abbott plans to enforce his ban. They noted that research shows that sanctuary cities are safer than non-sanctuary cities, and that immigrants -including the undocumented - are associated with lower levels of crime than the native-born.
The controversial bill, also known as SB4, was signed into law Monday over Facebook Live. This is Abbott's second gambit against the sheriff: he has already cut off some of her county's budget in response to her attitude towards immigrants.
