Tad Cummins, the 50-year-old former Maury County teacher accused of abducting a 15-year-old student last month, will return to Tennessee by air, but it is unclear when, federal authorities confirmed Tuesday. "And so, he went with her so that he could know that she was safe".

Anthony Thomas and Bozeman, who were speaking from Columbia, Tennessee, said the teenager's weight loss is noticeable.

"Sometimes she'll be happy and laughing and back to the same old girl and then she'll be sometimes just in the fetal position crying", Anthony Thomas said. The cabin they were staying in at the time is more than 2,000 miles from where the search began.

As Cummins was being arrested, he told authorities, "I'm glad this is over", Siskiyou County Sheriff's Sgt. Mike Gilley said at a news conference Thursday.

"I believe the Federal Bureau of Investigation are going to make sure she's healthy before she comes home", she said.

Cummins, who was the girl's teacher before being fired from his high school, is charged with taking a minor across states lines to have sex. When school officials questioned the girl about the incident, she allegedly denied that it happened.

The school system didn't suspend Cummins until February 6.

Danielle Thomas said the family's first inclination when Elizabeth went missing was that she had run away.

The criminal complaint states that Cummins stopped in Oklahoma twice, booking hotel rooms in his own name and even listing his phone number. Court records show that Jill Cummins sued her then-missing husband on the grounds of irreconcilable differences and inappropriate marital conduct. He is awaiting extradition to Tennessee, where he will be charged with sexual contact with a minor and aggravated kidnapping.

Cummins - who authorities have said also faces multiple charges in California and Tennessee - appeared in federal court in Sacramento, California, on Monday afternoon. It remains unclear whether he will enter a plea during the proceeding.

"He's done this terrible thing, that he has to pay for", she told NBC News.

"The people who are working with her are some of the best in their field, so I'm confident that they're going to formulate a treatment plan which will work", Thomas explained.

Elizabeth Thomas' father said her former teacher Tad Cummins kept her in the dark that anyone was searching for them while they were on the run for 38 days. "It was kind of a roller coaster of emotions for her".

"The family owes each group, law enforcement, the media and the public a debt of gratitude that can not be repaid", Jason Whatley, the Thomas family's attorney said, in a statement.

Cummins denied kissing the girl when detectives questioned him the next day.

"What do you say in these circumstances?" "She could easily pass for 12".

Court papers filed recently in the girl's disappearance said she was afraid of the teacher and thought she would face repercussions at school if she resisted him. "This was the abduction of an impressionable, little child".
