A second rally and march, organized by the Armenian Genocide Committee, is scheduled to begin at noon at Pan Pacific Park at 7600 Beverly Blvd., also bound for the consulate at 6300 Wilshire Blvd.
President Donald Trump is recalling the death and suffering of more than 1 million Armenians during the final years of the Ottoman Empire, without describing it as genocide.
Although an intrepid press helped to inform America of the plight of the Armenians, the horrors of World War I soon eclipsed the 20 century's first genocide.
More than 200,000 people of Armenian descent live in Los Angeles County, making Southern California home to the largest Armenian community outside of Armenia.
Hamparian has now slammed Trump as well, the L.A. Times reported, accusing the Republican of "effectively outsourcing USA genocide-prevention policy to [Turkish President] Recep Erdogan, an arrogant and authoritarian dictator who clearly enjoys the public spectacle of arm-twisting American presidents into silence on Turkey's mass murder of millions of Armenians, Greeks, Assyrians, and other Christians".
Armenian-American advocacy organizations, and lawmakers from California and other states with significant Armenian-American populations, were quick to blast Trump's words as inadequate.
President Obama used the phrase "the first mass atrocity of the 20th century" and, in later statements, also used the Armenian expression Meds Yeghern.

"I think it was the Czech Republic's debt to formally recognize the genocide". Although Barack Obama talked about the genocide on the campaign trail, he repeatedly broke his promise to officially recognize it once he took office - even on the centennial anniversary.
"He called it a great catastrophe", Hovsepian said.
The United States has not recognized the mass killings largely because doing so would anger Turkey, a longtime US ally and North Atlantic Treaty Organisation member. He said the Armenian Genocide is a holocaust that many people are unaware of.
The Turkish government still refuses to acknowledge its culpability for the crimes. "But Turkey's current President Erdogan has walked any progress back", Hovsepian said.
