Investigators have formally ruled Hernandez's death a suicide.
Ward explained she came forward because she had an opportunity to be a voice for other families of murder victims seeking justice. His attorney, Jose Baez, said he did not leave a suicide note nor was he on suicide watch.

Hernandez was found dead with the words "John 3:16" written on his forehead, according to a law enforcement source directly involved in the investigation into the former National Football League star's death.
Shayanna Jenkins-Hernandez on Friday filed papers in Bristol Superior Court saying she was contemplating a lawsuit over the supervision he received while in prison. "Undisputed champions of football, but we want to provide the Patriots with the opportunity to become something more", said Sheff.
This is according to a Massachusetts' "abatement" law that would erase a conviction if it is found that the person died before all forms of appeals have been attempted.
Hernandez was arrested on a murder charge in 2013, and was soon after cut by the Patriots.

A MA judge Friday ordered state officials to preserve evidence in the investigation into Aaron Hernandez's death in his jail cell earlier this week.
That information comes from a joint statement from Worcester County District Attorney Joseph Early Jr., Massachusetts State Police Superintendent Col. Richard McKeon, and Secretary of Public Safety Daniel Bennett.
MA is one of the states that recognizes "abatement ab initio", which says a defendant's convictions are void if he didn't exhaust all of his legal appeals upon his passing.
Hernandez was reportedly locked into his cell at 8 p.m. on Tuesday, and no one at the prison entered the cell until about 3 a.m. the next morning, after Hernandez had reportedly hung himself.
