A look at key moments for former NFL star Aaron Hernandez

Former New England Patriots player Aaron Hernandez, an explosive tight end who had been convicted of murder and last week cleared in two other killings, was discovered dead in his prison cell by a corrections officer early Wednesday morning, authorities said.

One of Aaron Hernandez's longtime friends says he's in shock and grieving after the National Football League star was found hanged in his prison cell. He tied one end of a bedsheet to a window and tried to jam the cell door to prevent guards from opening it, Fallon said. Mr. Hernandez also attempted to block his door from the inside by jamming the door with various items.

"We're aware of the report, but do not anticipate issuing a statement today", the team said.

Just five days ago he was acquitted of a double murder in 2012, seemingly a bit of good news in an otherwise trying situation separated from his fiancee and daughter.

Fallon said he's not aware of any suicide note written by Hernandez.

He died the same day that President Trump is hosting the Super Bowl champion New England Patriots at an event at the White House.

A person with direct knowledge who spoke on condition of anonymity told the Boston Globe that while many observers of Hernandez's recent trial remarked on his stoic demeanor, he was insecure and clung to gang members for approval within prison walls. "Mr. Hernandez's next of kin have been notified". Daniel de Abreu and Safiro Furtado were shot and killed in 2012, and prosecutors argued that Hernandez had pulled the trigger.

He was serving a sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole.

Massachusetts State Police has now launched an investigation into the suicide at the Souza Baranowski Correctional Centre in the town of Shirley. He said officials had no reason to believe Hernandez might take his life, and if they had had had any such worries, he would have been transferred to a mental health unit.

"There were no conversations or correspondence from Aaron to his family or legal team that would have indicated anything like this was possible", said lawyer Jose Baez, who successfully defended Hernandez in the double-murder trial. The Patriots release him hours after his arrest.
