He later died while on his way to the hospital. As of late Tuesday, the 9-year-old boy was listed in stable condition and said to be improving.

He wanted the boy to see the flowers, the candles, the balloons, the love shown to his friend, 8-year-old Jonathan Martinez, and the teacher who was also killed.

Marsden said counselors met with Jonathan's parents Tuesday.

The family has asked for privacy during this time, but wants the public to know that Martinez was a happy child. But Smith moved out of their home in mid-March amid domestic strife, Burguan said. He went to her classroom and "without saying anything" shot her with a large-calibre revolver, Mr Burguan said.

The gun used was originally sold in 1979. This undated photo released by the San Bernardino Police Department shows Cedric Anderson, 53.

Anderson has four adult children, all of whom have been accounted for, Burguan said. He said Anderson wasn't employed but previously had work as a maintenance worker and a pastor.

Mrs Sykes said her daughter had taught Sunday school for years before joining North Park School. Officials said the couple were separated at the time of the shooting.

Anderson had told school personnel he was there to drop something off to his wife, which is "not uncommon", according to Burguan. There is no indication the suspect's handgun was visible when he entered the school, Maass said. "I don't know what to tell her", Barajas said as the two held each other and sobbed after the ordeal that sent police flooding onto the campus of San Bernardino's North Park School. "No one has come forward to say they saw this coming", Burguan said Monday afternoon during a news conference.

The gunman's "relatively short" marriage and his alleged history of crime and drug use preceded the attack at the grade school, according to police.

It was stark evidence that the president is moving ever further from his campaign promises to establish better ties with Moscow. Trump said it was "certainly possible" though "probably unlikely".

Anderson allegedly accused Smith of cheating within a month of getting married, relatives claimed.

Family members say Smith was a special person.

One of the first parents to be reunited with a child was Raffle, who cried tears of joys as she embraced her son. She said a neighbor came to her aid when she began crying. "She had mentioned that his behavior was odd and that she was concerned about his behavior and that he had made some threats towards her", the chief said.

Karen Smith told her loved ones that she didn't necessarily take the threats from her new husband seriously but thought Cedric Anderson was reaching out for attention, Police Chief Jarrod Burguan told reporters.

The police chief also said a note believed to be from Anderson had been found that talked about needing closure and feeling disrespected.

As the investigation continues, the school will remain closed until next Monday.

Jennifer Smith, who became a teacher like her mother, said Karen Smith's impact last long after her students left her classroom.

Smith was a teacher at the school.

Hours after the shooting Monday night, hundreds of people gathered at a Catholic church in San Bernardino to mourn the victims.
