Yesterday morning, wearing the very same number which was nearly ripped off her five decades earlier, the now 70-year-old Switzer completed the Boston Marathon for a ninth time.

Carlson ran 26.2 miles in honor of 261, the bib number Switzer wore on that historic day.

On Monday, wearing the very same number which she had nearly had torn off her jumper five decades earlier, Ms Switzer completed the race in four hours, 44 minutes and 31 seconds in her "full regalia" - "the bib plus the eye liner, mascara and lipstick".

She finished anyway, and returned to the course eight more times, including this year, finishing in 2017 with a time of 4:44:31.

Switzer went on to be the women's victor of the 1974 New York City Marathon and provide TV commentary in Boston for the last 37 years.

The sole woman on the course that day, Katherine Switzer, was the first woman to break the gender barrier at the Boston Marathon. I couldn't walk or move or stand up.

"My message to young girls is that you can do much more than you ever can imagine", she told NBC.

Beijing has retaliated against South Korean businesses, while its military has threatened to take unspecified action in response. It's the staging ground for American military exercises - and a check on the alliance between the Chinese and North Koreans.

Switzer went on to found 261 Fearless, a foundation established to support women as they "take on their personal challenges through running or walking".

But Briggs struck a deal with her: If Switzer could complete the distance on a training run, he would bring her himself.

In 1963 two women crashed the Western Hemisphere Marathon in Culver City, Calif., and one finished.

In a sign of how times have changed, Switzer was cheered by crowds, and fired the starting gun for the women elite runners' race.

Race winners were officially awarded Monday evening at Fenway Park. "I had said this morning that this was my favorite Boston Marathon".

But Ethiopia has surpassed its East African neighbors on Patriots' Day the past four years, earning its first sweep in 2016. "I want to celebrate in the best possible way and crossing that finish line is going to be a wonderful experience". Geoffrey Kirui of Kenya came in first place for the men at 2:09:37, narrowly edging out American runner Galen Rupp who crossed the finish line at 2:09:58.
