Sumter native and former South Carolina Gamecock Jordan Montgomery got to Yankee Stadium about four hours before game time, had a few cups of coffee and prepared for his major league debut. Pineda pitched two-hit ball over 7e_SEmS2/3 innings Monday and left to a standing ovation in the Yankees' 8-1 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays.
According to the NY Yankees PR department, Montgomery is just the second Yankee lefthanded starting pitcher since 1913 to record seven or more strikeouts in his Major League debut, joining Al Leiter in that exclusive club.
Entering the fifth inning with a 3-0 lead, Snell loaded the bases on single (Chase Headley), walk (Aaron Judge), and fielding error by Tim Beckham on a Kyle Higashioka grounder. A Hicks fielder's choice brought home New York's sixth run of the game; Judge added an exclamation point in the seventh with a towering blast to dead center field, his seventh HR in 35 career games and third straight contest with a homer.
Gardner was diagnosed with a bruised jaw and a strained beck, and Weeks with neck and right shoulder soreness.
Xavier Cedeno fielded the ball and turned toward second, hoping to start an inning-ending double play but forgetting the infield was in and no one was covering the base. The Yankees broke a 3-1 game open with a five-run eighth. Gardner crawled to touch first before rolling onto his back, and both left the game.
"Because of how hard Tanaka worked in that fifth inning (in Saturday's loss to Baltimore), I actually told Larry (Rothschild) after the game that it might be a good idea to give him an extra day", Girardi said Monday.
Champions League: Juventus thrash Barcelona 3-0 in quarters
Barcelona began to press but the Juventus defence held out and Messi's last chance saw him hit a free-kick into the wall. As two months ago in Paris, Barcelona were defensively weak the whole game.
"He was doing a good job of mixing his slider in and putting it in a good spot where it was just the bottom of the zone or diving down below", Morrison said.
"I noticed especially previous year catching him in [Triple-A Scranton Wilkes/Barre], he always takes it to another level when he's in a little bit of trouble", said catcher Kyle Higashioka, who started for the first time in the majors Wednesday.
"I thought he was a step getting past me, but obviously, it was a step at the same time", Weeks said.
Montgomery allowed three hits on five hits with seven strikeouts and two walks in 4.2 innings. "We've got to figure out a way to clean that up".
Montgomery was selected by the Yankees in the fourth round (No. 122 overall) of the 2014 MLB Draft.
The Rays and Yankees conclude the series Thursday night, with Matt Andriese facing Luis Severino.
