Blasts three homers in win over Phillies

Monday night's game against the Mets turned heated when Phillies reliever Edubray Ramos threw a fastball over the head of New York Mets shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera.

Cespedes became just the 13th Mets player to hit three homers in a game, and the only one in franchise history to do it twice.

Buchholz was relieved by Adam Morgan, who gave up four runs of his own, followed by Joely Rodriguez, who gave up three earned runs, and Jeanmar Gomez, who gave up one. He hit a double and grounder in his last two at-bats.

In the fifth, Cespedes went deep for a third time, swatting another solo home run off of Morgan.

Cespedes first got a home run hat trick on August 21, 2015 in a 14-9 win over the Rockies at Coors Field.

"There might have been (history with Ramos and Cabrera), there probably was, but I don't think about that during the course of the game", Mackanin said.

Mathematically impressive as his night was, you don't need a calculator to see that Cespedes mashed the Phillies to oblivion tonight.

In 2015, Buchholz made his last start of the season on July 11. In fact, after watching the Mets the first week of the season, it would be the last thing anyone would expect.

Buchholz allowed six earned runs in two and two-thirds innings before departing.

Yet Ramos denied Monday night that his pitch - thrown way high and way behind Cabrera in a 2-2 game in the eighth inning - was on goal.

On a positive note, this has been the only game that the Phillies have been completely embarrassed and had no chance to win.

With a day to cool off, Phillies manager Pete Mackanin stuck by the player who injected controversy into Monday's game and brought an early end to the skipper's night.

The Mets (5-3) hit seven homers as a team, and starter Matt Harvey (2-0) left the game in the sixth with a tight left hamstring but said he will be ready for his next start Sunday.

Phillies: RHP Vince Velasquez (0-1, 9.00) gets his second start.

A lot of had to do with the continued consistency from right-handed pitcher Jerad Eickhoff, who had his 10th straight start allowing three or fewer runs.
