"We look forward to welcoming the world after what we hope is a successful bid", said U.S. Soccer president Sunil Gulati (pictured centre) after his country, Mexico and Canada formally gave notice of their widely anticipated plans at a jointly staged press conference at the World Trade Centre in NY.

It was also confirmed by Gulati that any potential tournament would be hosted in the USA from the quarterfinal stage onwards, thus meaning the World Cup final would take place in the United States of America.

If the three-part bid wins approval, and there is little reason to believe any one nation or nations from Africa or even Australia, could match it - a North American World Cup would be only the second time more than one nation has hosted the event.

The U.S. -led bid expects 60 games to be played in that country, with 10 in Canada and 10 in Mexico.

US President Donald Trump has promised to build a border wall between the U.S. and Mexico but Sunil Gulati, president of the US Soccer Federation, said Trump is "supportive" of the bid and had "encouraged" it.

"The president of the United States is fully supportive and encouraged us to have this joint bid", he stressed. Canada hosted the 2015 Women's World Cup, but every venue used was composed of artificial turf - a decision that was widely derided.

That sense of certainty hardened past year, when FIFA's council ruled that neither Europe nor Asia would be eligible to run for the 2026 tournament on the grounds that the regions are hosting the next two World Cups.

The hosts will be officially announced by Federation Internationale de Football Association in 2020.

A Concacaf member nation last staged the World Cup in 1994, when the U.S. played host to a tournament that preceded the launch of Major League Soccer (MLS) two years later. For the 2014 World Cup, Brazil had a total of 12 stadiums used as sites for games.

It may still be nearly a decade away, but the 2026 World Cup is already in sight for many teams. Canada put on a women's World Cup. According to Sports Illustrated, the USA joined with its neighbors due to FIFA's concerns that President Trump's immigration restrictions could create problems for traveling players and fans. Canada has yet to host the marquee Federation Internationale de Football Association event, and has only qualified once to compete - in 1986 when the nation fell in the first round without any victory. We clearly between the three countries have 40, 50 stadiums that meet FIFA's qualifications and criteria, as well as cities and hotels and air.

Some reports have suggested that Morocco, which failed in bids for four previous World Cups, could team up with Spain and possibly Portugal in a joint bid. All games from quarter-finals will also be played in the United States. "This will be an extraordinarily successful World Cup on financial and economic grounds, and that's critical because most of FIFA's revenues come from one event".

It looks like this North American bid will go unopposed, as Asia and Europe won't be bidding on the 2026 event because of the 2018 tournament in Russian Federation and 2022 in Qatar.
