Gillibrand, Schumer push Trump to investigate Canadian milk pricing

The lawmakers sent a letter to USA trade officials calling on them to investigate Canada's National Ingredients Strategy, a type of pricing program that gives incentives for Canadian dairy processors that steer away from purchasing dairy products produced in the United States.

Wisconsin and NY state officials have asked the U.S. Department of Agriculture to take action to help dairy farmers in their states who've been hurt by Canada's decision to impose duties on imports of a product called ultra-filtered milk.

The secretary of Wisconsin's Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection is calling for federal action after a Canadian pricing policy cost some Wisconsin dairy farmers their milk contracts. "We urge you to exhaust all potential avenues to bring Canada into compliance with its trade commitments and establish dependable trading conditions for USA companies exporting to Canada", the Senators wrote.

DATCP Secretary Ben Brancel will lead a delegation of Wisconsin dairy and agricultural companies on a trade mission to Mexico in May, where the companies will showcase Wisconsin products and technology in a special Wisconsin Pavilion at Expo Leche, Mexico's largest annual dairy industry conference. Meanwhile, officials with Canada's dairy industry claim they are being wrongly blamed for a decision by the Wisconsin-based Grassland Dairy Products Inc.to drop about 75 of its farm suppliers by May 1.

In addition to attending several events at Expo Leche, Brancel is scheduled to meet with numerous top-level Mexican officials in efforts to continue to establish and reinforce relationships with Mexico and increase awareness of Wisconsin dairy and agricultural industries. Canada must be clearly and swiftly reminded in a concrete way that dependable trading conditions between our two countries is critically important to their country as well. Last year, the United States dairy industry exported roughly 15 percent of its milk production.

We thank you for the U.S. Government's work to date on this issue and urge you to fully investigate whether Canada's Class 7 National Ingredients Strategy and Ontario's Class 6 pricing program are in keeping with Canada's commitments to the United States under NAFTA and the WTO.
