Sen. Susan Collins said Tuesday that she is seriously contemplating a run for ME governor in 2018, the most definitive statement she has made on a topic that has always been the subject of political speculation.

The Maine Republican told WGAN-AM on Tuesday that she's looking at where she "can do the most good for the people of Maine".

Democrats should never forget that Susan Collins is not on their team: As the Portland Press Herald notes, if Collins resigns from the Senate in 2018, current ME governor Paul LePage will get to appoint a replacement to serve the final two years of her term. Under the state's constitution, a governor can only serve two back-to-back four-year terms.

Collins ran for governor in 1994 but lost to independent Angus King, who now serves alongside her as the junior United States senator from Maine.

Collins ran for governor in 1994, the Press Herald reports. "In the Senate I now have significant seniority and that allows me to do a lot".

Collins said if she "were fortunate enough to be elected" governor, she could work on issues "like economic development, jobs, education".

"Collins said during her interview on Tuesday that both positions, either remaining in the Senate or running for governor, would have their advantages".

"So I'm trying to figure out where I can do the most good".

She told WGAN earlier in the day that she "truly" doesn't know what she's going to do.

"I really don't have a timetable for making a decision", Collins said in a phone interview.

"The frenetic pace and turbulent political environment in Washington have prevented me from spending any significant time thinking through the pros and the cons", Collins wrote. Collins has made a name for herself as a very moderate Republican, yet remains quite popular among Mainers.

Additionally, Democrats looking to run are Maine Attorney General Janet Mills, vehicle dealership board chairman Adam Lee, Sanford attorney Adam Cote, former Speaker of the House Mark Eves and lobbyist Betsy Sweet.
