Sergio Garcia won a sudden-death playoff Sunday against Justin Rose to decide the 81st Masters Tournament.
Both Garcia and Rose shot 3-under-par 69s to finish regulation tied at 9-under-par at Augusta National Golf Club. Those are the moments that people who win this tournament have when they play on the Sunday. But he was still in a four-way tie for the lead, and it looked as though he had regained his form when he birdied two of the first four holes Saturday. He has found his groove and will be ready to take home his second career Masters title with one more brilliant performance. He died in 2011 at age 54. Garcia said after his round.
Asked about the two houses that the Hagestad party is renting this week, he said, "I'm supposed to be in the quieter one, so I've been going to bed". Here's everything you should know about the competitor!
If you like English golfers, then Rose is your man. A year ago was an exception to the rule as Danny Willett came out of the third-to-last group to win.
The 27-year-old was speaking after a third round which saw him struggle to get any momentum going on a day he had hoped to make his move up the leaderboard.
"I had some chances on the back nine that I could have converted", he said. I'm looking for my first Masters, my first green jacket.
"First timers don't usually have a great history at Torrey Pines either and I was able to win that", Rahm said.
"There's wonderful storylines (heading into the last round)", said Rose, whose best Masters finish was a tie for second behind Spieth in 2015.
Saturday's round was like watching a high-level chess match, never quite sure who had the real advantage.
Pieters was the first to leave the rarefied air.
Putting first, Rose missed his par putt and tapped in for bogey. The ball stayed up and avoided a watery resting place, though, and Garcia got it up and down for one of his four birdies on the day.
Fowler floundered early, finishing the 10th hole at 1 over for the day. Spieth, though, started clawing back with a birdie on No. 16 to reframe his focus and, although he was 10 shots down, he had confidence he could contend.
Rose, Garcia lead at Masters in prelude to finale
William McGirt kneels to get a better view after hitting from the fairway on the 17th hole during the second round of the Masters. Open, which announced earlier this year that it had raised its purse to $12 million, pays more among the major championships.
"You have to be patient", Fowler said. But [I'm] happy. I'm two back, I've been playing good golf, and I'm really happy with where I'm at. "You can put yourself in bad positions even trying to play to the safe spot".
Rose reached the top with a run of five birdies over his last seven holes.
At least he gave himself some positive vibes to sleep on with a tricky two-putt par save from 60 feet at the 18th hole, recovering from an approach shot that dropped on the fringe about pin high but caught a little ridge, sending it tumbling back down to the front tier of the green.
"Obviously I would like to be deep in the red, but one under is pretty good".
Garcia's 70 was a major triumph for him.
Sergio Garcia was not going to be reminded again about his failures on Saturdays at Augusta National. And for those counting, he has gone 74 majors without a win. After a bogey at No. 6 and a birdie at No. 8, he came alive on the back nine with five birdies: Nos. On 15, he made a 4-footer for the birdie. "This is by far the best I've felt in a major".
"I feel like I play as aggressive as anyone round here. So I'm certainly going to go for broke tomorrow".
Still, with all of that talent at the top, the real favorite might be Spieth. In super windy conditions, Charley dominated the competition by FOUR strokes - the biggest lead after the first round of Masters since 1941. The resulting 67 matched his lowest score in the Masters.
He will be paired with Spieth in the penultimate group.
However, after making a birdie on the par-five second, the Northern Irishman three-pu tted the fourth from 95 feet and had to scramble to save par on the next two holes.
So call Sunday's final round a coin flip.
