Lexus LS 500 F SPORT debuts in New York

Lexus' fifth-generation LS introduced for the 2018 model year has now received its F-Sport package, though before you get too excited note that this isn't a dedicated performance auto we're talking about.

Unfortunately, this isn't the full-bore LS F we've wanted for years.

A black suede headliner completes the transformation - although owners don't have to settle for a dark and sober interior - Lexus will offer F Sport customers the option of a bright "Circuit Red" interior.

The F-Sport package adds some exclusive items to the cabin, too.

On the subject of powertrain, it will be available in two versions - the first as a 3.5-litre twin-turbocharged V6 mated to a 10-speed automatic transmission and good for a 0-60mph time of 4.5 seconds. The last LS460 F Sport we tested made the same run in six seconds.

The LS500h is not quite so aggro. This is a hybrid Toyota motor yacht. It also sits on 20-inch alloy wheels.

Funeral held for music legend Chuck Berry in St. Louis
That sentiment was echoed Sunday by David Letterman's former band leader, Paul Shaffer , who spoke to the St. Berry was part of the inaugural class of musicians inducted into the Rock "n" Roll Hall of Fame.

Equipping the LS 500 F SPORT with standard 20-inch wheels and 245/45RF20+ 275/40RF20 tires, (summer tires for RWD) along with larger front and rear brakes (6-piston calipers on front and 4 pistons on rear), unlocks more of the platform's intrinsic performance capability.

Available on both the petrol-powered LS 500 and the LS 500h petrol-electric hybrid, the F Sport trim level features a more aggressive interpretation of the company's now-familiar spindle grille, painted in black and featuring 7000 individual facets in its mesh-like structure. In short, the "sport" is all wrapped up in the handling package. Perforated grille patterning on the leather is joined by scored aluminum trim, and there's an F SPORT steering wheel.

Power remains the same for both the LS 500 and LS 500h F Sport.

Developing the F SPORT grille took computer-aided design (CAD) operators some five months to achieve the desired texture and interaction with light.

The F Sport is also about putting on the appearance of track-tuned wildness-as seen with its racy rocker panels and trunk moldings. And just for F Sport customers, Lexus is offering Ultra White paint to finish the whole thing off. Lexus may never again launch a full-scale rout of the Swabians and Bavarians, but the new LS suggests it's back on the playing field after years away from serious contention.
