Gov. Dannel P. Malloy released more good news this week as graduation rates in the state reached an all-time high during the 2016 school year, hitting 87.4 percent, and that graduation gaps continue to close. Regulations issued by President Barack Obama's administration cleared that up: They specified that states must identify and provide comprehensive support to high schools that failed to graduate two-thirds of their students with regular diplomas in four years.

As a district, New Haven Public Schools increased its four-year rate to 77.5 percent in 2016, a 13.6 percentage point increase since 2011. She attributed the improvements to a myriad of state education programs and grants, and attention to low-performing school districts.

Special education students also showed a decline of 0.4 percent with 65.2 percent graduating past year.

Iowa has one of the best high school graduation rates in the country, according to the federal National Center for Education Statistics. Torlakson said those students have improved the most since a year ago. "We are a far more diverse state that has more students living in poverty or near poverty than most other states".

Frances Gipson, LAUSD's chief academic officer, said despite the suspension of the exit exam, the standards for graduating LAUSD students are actually tougher, because of the A-G requirements.

The gap in graduation rates between female and male students, meanwhile appears to be widening with girls graduating at a 90.6 percent rate - up 0.5 percent from the previous year - while boys graduated at a rate of 84.3 percent - a decline of 0.1 percent.

"I am proud of the heroic efforts by our teachers, counselors, parents, administrators and classified staff who rally around our students every day", LAUSD Superintendent Michelle King said.

"Over this period, 2.8 million more students have graduated rather than dropped out, with significant implications to them, the economy, and society", the letter reads.

You see, I was a zig-zag man before that ... and we became very good friends quickly thereafter. We were making records and it was just a moment. "He's American history", Snoop said.

School leaders say it is possible to have both rates go up since it measures different types of students.

However, graduation rates for those groups still lag behind those for white and Asian students. The graduation rate for black students reached 78.8 percent in 2016, up 7.6 points since 2011.

"The increasing rates show that the positive changes in California schools are taking us in the right direction".

Iowa's four-year graduation rate climbed among African American students, Hispanic students and white students, but decreased among Asian students, Native American students, students in special education, students from low-income backgrounds, and students whose native language is not English. (It's now at an all-time high of 83.2 percent, a 12-point gain since 2001).

The Cedar Rapids district has a rate of 3.8 percent. That is up from 87.2 percent in 2015 and 84.8 percent in 2011.

Paca said he believes the city's schools should "partner more actively" with trade schools, colleges and universities to prepare city students for long-term success.
