The chiefs of the three countries' national soccer organizations broke the news in New York City on Monday, announcing their joint bid to host the 2026 men's World Cup.

Sunil Gulati, US Soccer Federation chief, who announced the bid in NY with his Canadian and Mexican counterparts on Monday, insisted they had the full backing of President Donald Trump, despite the US leader's rocky relations with Mexico.

"A nation without borders is not a nation".

"We heard something about Morocco", Gulati said, "but we don't know yet".

Representatives from the United States Soccer Federation, the Canadian Soccer Association and the Mexican Football Federation announced that the 2026 competition, which will feature 48 nations for the first time, will also see the tournament potentially hosted in three different countries for the first time.

Argentina and Uruguay are keen on co-hosting the centenary World Cup in 2030. The United States hosted the 1994 tournament, and the Rose Bowl was the site of the final.

The bidding process is expected to begin later this year and to run until 2020.

Nor did Lavrov cancel Tillerson's visit to Moscow , suggesting Russian Federation may be willing to tolerate the single strike. However, the foreign secretary cancelled the trip following a telephone conversation with Tillerson.

CONCACAF made the decision to support the bid at its congress in Aruba at the weekend with US Soccer federation president Sunil Gulati Gulati shortly to appear with his US and Mexican counterparts Victor Montagliani and Decio de Maria at a news conference in NY.

"We think this is a positive signal and symbol we should do together in unifying people, especially in all three countries".

"We have very specifically addressed this with the president", Gulati said of the Trump controversies.

Al Jazeera's Gabriel Elizondo, reporting from NY, said: "While the decision isn't expected for another three years, this joint bid is a clear front runner also because there appears to be no challengers".

If successful, it would mark just the second time that the tournament has had multiple hosts after the 2002 World Cup was co-hosted by Japan and South Korea.

The proposal for the first World Cup with the field expanded from 32 to 48 teams is that the US hosts all the games from the quarterfinals.
