Westbrook breaks record then sinks buzzer-beater

Westbrook has already clinched his triple-double average for the season - now posting 31.7 points, 10.7 rebounds, and 10.4 assists per game - and is also on track to lead the league in scoring. "I thought winning is what this is about - period", Harden said.

But this season, Westbrook has accomplished what many thought may never happen again: an National Basketball Association player averaging a triple-double throughout an 82-game National Basketball Association season.

Westbrook had 23 points, 12 rebounds and six assists at halftime and was hearing chants of "MVP!"

And guess what? In another arena a guy named Russell Westbrook, fellow MVP candidate, hits a buzzer beating game victor, his 50th point of the night, and records his 42nd triple double of the season smashing Oscar Robertson's 1961-62 record on his way to - like the Big O - averaging a triple double for the season. Most often, it's points, rebounds and assists.

Westbrook has seen congratulatory tweets and messages from all across the league since his game Sunday, with many National Basketball Association players joining in on the calls for him to be named MVP. "It's been awesome. It's something I could never dream about growing up in inner-city Los Angeles".

With his triple-double in the books, Westbrook scored his team's final 15 points, including a 3-pointer as the buzzer sounded after a timeout with 2.9 seconds left.

A triple-double is when a player manages double-digit numbers in three statistical categories in one game.

Even Robertson himself gave the new record holder his props for breaking a record that seemed to be unbreakable when it was last set.

"My motto was "Why not?'" said Westbrook, whose 79th career triple-double moved him past Wilt Chamberlain for fourth place on the all-time list".

"I think that's the most important thing".

The one question that remains: is Russell Westbrook the NBA's Most Valuable Player?
