Duque, whose country is the only one in the region that refuses to rule out military intervention in Venezuela, responded at a public event, saying that "Colombia is in no position to attack any other State".

The EU on Thursday condemned a decision to strip Venezuelan opposition leader Juan Guaido of immunity from prosecution, calling it a "serious violation" of the constitution that undermined the chances of a peaceful solution to the country's crisis.

A group of retired army and police officers on Tuesday sided with Guaido, daily El Nacional reported.

But whether the government of President Maduro will take action against the 35-year-old following the Constituent Assembly's decision remains unclear.

Defying the court order, Mr Guaido left the country in late February for a 10-day tour of South America, meeting with foreign leaders who support the Venezuelan opposition and who reject Mr Maduro's election last year for a second six-year term.

The Constituent Assembly, a legislative body created by Maduro to sideline the opposition-controlled National Assembly, was expected to vote on the Court's request later Tuesday. Its creation essentially replaced the National Assembly, rendering it powerless.

The move by the National Constituent Assembly paves the way for his prosecution and potential arrest for supposedly violating the constitution when he declared himself interim president.

Venezuela's Constituent Assembly, an all-powerful legislature controlled by the ruling Socialist Party, on Tuesday approved a measure allowing for a trial of opposition leader Juan Guaido, in what appeared to be step toward having him arrested. Officials have jailed his chief of staff, Roberto Marrero, and accused him of involvement in a "terrorist" scheme to overthrow the government.

Guaido, the head of the opposition-dominated National Assembly, is accused of inciting violence and lying about his personal finances in addition to ignoring a travel ban, which he breached by leaving the country to drum up support overseas for regime change.

The country's rival president labelled the move a "cowardly" attempt to stifle a popular uprising against President Maduro's "miserable and murderous" regime.
