The CDC announced its findings on Tuesday, revealing that cases of chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis reached record highs in 2018.

In California, cases of congenital syphilis - the term used when a mother passes the infection to her baby during pregnancy - continued an acute seven-year climb, to 332 cases, a whopping 18.1% increase from 2017. About 35,000 cases of the most contagious forms of the disease were reported - also the most since 1991.

"There are tools available to prevent every case of congenital syphilis", said Dr. Gail Bolan, the director of CDC's Division of STD Prevention. The state had only a single reported case from 2013 through 2017. Five states - Texas, California, Florida, Arizona, and Louisiana - accounted for 70 percent of all congenital syphilis cases a year ago.

Councillor arrested at Extinction Rebellion protest
Extinction Rebellion was launched in 2018 and organizers say it now has groups willing to take action in dozens of countries. Mr Brown was among scores of activists arrested amid demonstrations aimed at shutting down the airport.

The CDC gives a handful of possible explanations for the increase in STD rates.

Antibiotics can cure syphilis, gonorrhea, and chlamydia, but the diseases must be caught early and not left untreated. However, nowadays, most local departments-faced with increasing caseloads and limited funding-track only syphilis cases, and sometimes track only syphilis cases involving women of childbearing age or women who are pregnant, according to KHN. Scientists worry antibiotic resistance may be a factor. Combine that with risk factors such as drug use and poverty, as well as reductions in STD awareness programs at both the state and local levels across the USA, and you have a recipe for record-breaking STD numbers. Over the years, gonorrhea has become resistant to almost every class of antibiotics used against it. Ceftriaxone (Rocephin) now stands as the only antibiotic to retain high effectiveness against gonorrhea in the United States, the CDC says.

The Washington State Department of Health says STD's (Sexually Transmitted Diseases) have risen steadily over the last five years, and nationally, are at an all time high-in Washington state as well.
