"For men who are allegedly so "proud" of being straight, they seem to show real incompetence at attracting women to their event", she said, retweeting footage of the march.

According to CBS Boston, hundreds of counter-demonstrators have already gathered at City Hall.

The marshal of the "Straight Pride" rally was Milo Yiannopoulos, a prominent and provocative gay member of the far-right movement.

Days prior to the parade, Boston Pride, which organizes the city's LGBTQ pride march, released a statement, calling the Straight Pride march a "trolling event, created to get a rise out of vulnerable communities".

Organisers said the event was meant to celebrate straight people as "an oppressed majority", and participants carried signs bearing the slogans "straight lives matter" and "make normalcy normal again".

A group calling itself Super Happy Fun America organized the "Straight Pride" parade in response to the hugely popular gay pride parades that take place in USA cities every year. Signs in the crowd read "Fuck Straight Pride", "End White Supremacy", and "If you hate gay people, blame straight people for having gay babies".

Officers fired pepper spray and made several arrests. "My fellow homosexuals have been embarrassing me for decades, and finally I've found my crowd..."

He added that he stands for traditional Christian family values - "even if I don't always live them".

Two weeks ago, a far-right rally and counter-demonstration by anti-fascist protesters in the city of Portland, Oregon passed with no major incident amid a heavy police presence. Boston police beefed up security along that route in anticipation of any potential clashes with opposing groups of straight pride demonstrators and those who accused them of being homophobic. "We are not an oppressed majority by an stretch of the imagination".

But the parade will have a clear political slant too, with participants due to walk alongside pro-Trump floats.

Most who came to protest the parade identified the group as being white supremacist, as seen by signs at the rally.
