The announcement on Monday by government spokesman Ali Rabiei is the latest twist in the saga of the Adrian Darya 1, which had been known as the Grace 1 when authorities seized it off Gibraltar on July 4 on suspicion of breaking European Union sanctions targeting Syria.

The Adrian Darya-1, whose name was changed from Grace 1 during its detention off Gibraltar, was released after a five-week standoff over whether it was carrying Iranian oil to Syria in violation of European Union and United States sanctions on 18 August.

Iran has sold the oil from a tanker released by Gibraltar after weeks in the custody of British Royal Marines and the vessel's owner will decide on its next destination, IRIB news agency quoted an Iranian government spokesman as saying on Monday.

An Iranian oil tanker that had originally been headed to the Greek port of Kalamata before changing destination to Turkey's port of Mesrin on Friday had no destination on Monday, according to ship tracking websites.

The vessel, laden with 2.1 million barrels of crude oil, was previously sailing to the port of Kalmata in southern Greece, but Athens said it would not accommodate the tanker. Earlier this month, Gibraltar released the Iranian tanker after Tehran gave assurances its oil cargo wouldn't go to Syria.

U.S. President Donald Trump signs a document reinstating sanctions against Iran after announcing the U.S. withdrawal from the Iran nuclear deal, in the Diplomatic Reception Room at the White House in Washington on May 8, 2018.

In the time since, Iran has lost billions of dollars in enterprise deals allowed by the agreement because the U.S.re-imposed and escalated sanctions mostly blocking Tehran from promoting crude overseas, a crucial supply of hard currency for the Islamic Republic.

The Adrian Darya 1, the tanker that the US sought to seize in Gibraltar last week, was sailing more than halfway into the Mediterranean Sea on Monday without declaring any destination. The State Department has pressured nations not to help the vessel.

Shipping data on Saturday had then indicated the vessel was to dock at the southern Turkish port of Mersin on August 31.

Iran stated any USA transfer to grab the vessel once more would have "heavy consequences".

Tensions have since escalated in the Gulf region, with explosions that damaged six tankers in May and June, Iran's shooting-down of a US surveillance drone and its seizure of a tanker flying the flag of USA ally Britain last month.
