District officials announced Tuesday night that the school would be closed for the remainder of the week, and crisis counselors would be available at a nearby church Wednesday. One of the suspects was detained by the school's security guard, Spurlock said.

In the brutal killing, two students left 13 people dead and dozens injured before turning the guns on themselves.

Other schools have reportedly been placed on high alert.

Rachel Short of Bacara USA says Kendrick Castillo started working at her company past year as an intern. "And then I just went after them", Christian Paulson said.

Cecilia Bedard, 19, had known Castillo since elementary school and said he was always friendly, modest and excited to help people.

And, he said, "America has seen too many of these senseless acts of violence".

Brad Bialy's son Brendan is a senior at the STEM school, which focuses on science, technology, engineering and math. Brendan told his father that the shooting started after the two suspects entered the classroom and one pulled a gun from a guitar case.

Separately, White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders said the Trump administration would do everything it can to find ways to safeguard schools. "I can't thank them enough". "The president is a parent and grandparent".

Nicholson-Kluth was unable to confirm details about the shooting.

Multiple people have been injured, in addition to two people who have been taken to the hospital.

STEM School is only about 7 miles from Littleton, site of the infamous Columbine High School shooting in 1999, Denver's FOX 31 reported.

Sheriff Tony Spurlock had earlier said several of the eight wounded students were in critical condition, including some in surgery.

The Douglas County Sheriff's Office says an 18-year-old male student was killed in the shooting at STEM School Highlands Ranch after two students opened fire Tuesday in the Denver suburb school. "Together, we will get through this hard time".

A passage from a New York Times report on the Highlands Ranch shooting offered a brief encapsulation of "generation lockdown".

One teen, identified as 18-year-old Kendrick Castillo, died in the shooting.

He made his first court appearance on Wednesday, facing one count of first-degree murder and 29 of attempted first-degree murder.

Nicholson-Kluth said police and deputies got there nearly immediately and heard shots as they arrived.

"We're heartbroken by the death of Kendrick Castillo, a victim of the STEM School Highlands Ranch shooting", the club tweeted.

Authorities worked to obtain search warrants for the suspects' homes as well as a vehicle found in the school parking lot, Spurlock said.

Spurlock said that the two suspects in the latest shooting had not been on the radar of law enforcement. He was just days away from graduation.

His accused accomplice, who is under the age of 18 and has not been publicly identified, is being charged separately as a juvenile, authorities said.
