Trump hails 'very positive' Venezuela talks with Putin

President Donald Trump said he discussed special counsel Robert Mueller's report with Vladimir Putin on Friday, but did not warn against the Russian president against meddling in United States elections.

White House press secretary Sarah Sanders said the two leaders spoke "very briefly" about the topic during the conversation, which also addressed protests in Venezuela and nuclear arms control of North Korea.

In an hourlong "very good talk" on Friday, Russia's president "sort of smiled" about Mueller's conclusions, Trump told reporters at the White House.

When asked in the White House on Friday whether he had warned Mr Putin that Moscow should not interfere in the next USA presidential election, Mr Trump told the reporter she was "very rude".

Trump confirmed the call in a series of tweets. Really, we didn't discuss it, he said, adding they went into great detail on issues such as Venezuela, North Korea and nuclear arms control. The president said Friday he believes Chinese officials "were excited about that, maybe more excited about that than they were about trade".

The US and about 50 other nations take the position that President Nicolas Maduro's re-election a year ago was irrevocably marred by fraud and he is not the legitimate president of Venezuela.

He said they had discussed the possibility of including China in the deal and that China would "very much would like to be a part of" it.

President Trump's senior national security aides met Friday at the Pentagon to review what acting defense secretary Patrick Shanahan called a "comprehensive set of options" for the administration's next steps in Venezuela. Lavrov answered in kind, calling on the United States not to interfere and proposing political negotiations to resolve the Venezuelan crisis.

Trump said he and Putin had instead focused on other topics, including the possibility of the new nuclear arms deal between the U.S., Russian Federation and China.

The two presidents also discussed prospects of Russia-U.S. relations, in particular, developing "mutually beneficial trade and investment ties".

While emphasizing it will do whatever Trump orders, uniformed military leaders have urged caution in internal discussions regarding the use of force.

Trump cancelled a summit meeting with Putin late previous year after Russian Federation seized three Ukrainian Navy ships on November 25 and arrested 24 sailors. He has repeatedly declined to publicly rebuff Putin for the 2016 operation.

Trump has clearly been bothered by George Conway's constant Twitter attacks and lashed out at him in March.

Mr Trump continued to put forward his narrative that the investigation was "a witch-hunt".
