Several hospitalized after blast at IL silicon plant

In a tweet early Saturday morning, the Lake County Sheriff's Office said emergency personnel were "working diligently" at the scene, and asked the public to avoid the area.

A massive explosion at a Waukegan silicone plant is believed to have killed three people.

At the time of the explosion, Madonia said, the three people who did not escape were actively mixing products - a process they've done hundreds of times before.

The explosion at AB Specialty Silicones, at 3790 Sunset Ave.in Waukegan, was heard and felt across Lake County around 9:45 p.m and was initially responded to by the Waukegan Fire Department.

IL state Rep. Joyce Mason, D-Gurnee, wrote on Facebook that employees of an unspecified business were inside the building at the time of the explosion, citing information she said she received from Waukegan Mayor Sam Cunningham. Two people dud not need medical treatment.

It wasn't immediately clear what caused the explosion, which damaged at least five other buildings in the area.

The blast went off on May 3 at AB Specialty Silicones, a silicone plant in an industrial facility, according to Waukegan fire and police officials, reported WGNTV. The Lake County Sheriff's Office warned residents to stay away from the area.

Many pictures on social media show the fire burning, and the moment of the explosion was caught on various cameras, such as porch cams, and posted to social media. "It shook our house and shook my insides".

"I've had friends from Antioch, Grayslake and Libertyville call to see if I am all right", she said.

Nancy Carreno, who lives on Atlantic Avenue near the plant, said the explosion didn't break any windows but it was loud.
