One person was fatally shot Wednesday night at an apartment complex close to the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, just a day after a gunman killed two students on campus, officials said.
The deadliest mass shooting on a US college campus took place at Virginia Tech University in Blacksburg, Virginia, in April 2007, when a student killed 32 people and then himself.
Two others have life-threatening injuries and another two have injuries that are not life-threatening. Howell, of Waynesville, and Ellis R. Parlier, 19 of Midland, were killed. He was arrested minutes after he started shooting.
Thousands gathered Wednesday on the campus of the University of North Carolina Charlotte on Wednesday, holding candles in memory of victims of a shooting.
Just before 6 p.m. - local time - panic spread across the campus after Emergency Management sent out an alert, asking students and faculty members to "Run, Hide, Fight".
Drew Pescaro, 19, of Apex, North Carolina; Sean Dehart, 20, of Apex, North Carolina; Rami Alramadhan, 20, of Saudi Arabia; and Emily Houpt, 23, of Charlotte, have been identified by Dubois as the injured victims.
The motive wasn't immediately clear.

A party spokesperson said: "Labour's European elections manifesto was agreed at the NEC today and it will be published soon". The party is deeply split over the issue.
Terrell's Texan grandfather, Paul Rold from Arlington, confirmed the suspect and his father moved to Charlotte from the Dallas area about two years ago when his mother died.
Mr Rold said the Charlotte campus shooting was the latest in a long line of mass shootings that would not end until laws reduce the volume of readily available guns. She said she began urging students fleeing the danger to go into a parking deck for cover. "I didn't think I would have to experience something like that", one student told NBC News. And I know that this violence has to stop.
The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department identified the shooter as former student Trystan Andrew Terrell.
WSOC-TV reported that the shooter was a student at the university. "Finally I grabbed someone and asked what was happening and he just said, 'Shooter, shooter, shooter, '" the UNC Charlotte junior said. She said too that she was not surprised to learn her boyfriend saved others, saying: "It's what he would have done". They said the numbers could change.
According to ABC News, Police were able to respond quickly to reports of shots being fired, as they were already on campus preparing for a concert with rapper Waka Flaka Flame.
A free concert by United States rapper Waka Flocka Flame at the school's football stadium was scheduled for 6pm, just after gunshots were reported.
The shooting took place three days after a gunman opened fire at a synagogue in Poway, California, killing a congregant.
