Us, which stars Lupita Nyong'o and Winston Duke, is already outdoing Peele's directorial debut Get Out, which grossed $33 million its debut weekend. Now the writer-director is back with Us, about a family whose vacation is shattered by intruders who look just like them.
Us has topped $70 million in its opening weekend, according to Deadline. More recently, in Us, you can hear him in the role of "injured deer".
Meanwhile, Paramount's animated Wonder Park came in third place with an additional $9.5 million to give the film a $30 million worldwide box office in its second week in theaters. It has a 94 per cent on Rotten Tomatoes, rare praise for the horror genre.
It's natural to compare Us to Get Out: Both are written and directed by Jordan Peele, as well as produced by Jason Blum (of Blumhouse Productions) and Sean McKittrick (of QC Entertainment). But from an outside perspective, that's where the similarities end. Thus far, Captain Marvel has brought in about $323 million worldwide.
Wofford players have "definitely watched" Kentucky play this season
All those compliments paid to Wofford aren't just lip service. Jackson chipped in 14 points, 10 rebounds and five assists. It just didn't open up for him today.
Opening in 1,000 more theaters than Get Out, Peele's newest film will likely pull in almost $70 million for its opening weekend, almost $20 million over expectations.
Though Get Out's return on dividends is hard to top, Us has plenty of competition in the horror category for meeting other benchmarks.
Remarkably, it's also the best opening weekend for a live-action original movie since James Cameron's Avatar in 2009, which made $77 million. The highest-ever opening for a horror movie goes to It: Chapter One ($123.4 million) followed by David Gordon Green's Halloween sequel/soft reboot ($76.2 million).
