Qatar reach Asian Cup final despite sandal-throwing UAE fans

Now that the dust has settled, it is nearly certain that Alberto Zaccheroni's contract with UAE will not be extended following his side's 4-0 loss against Qatar in the AFC Asian Cup semi-finals on Tuesday. However, following their departure from the tournament in the final four, it may be time for the Italian to move on from his role with UAE.

A dejected-looking Zaccheroni revealed that he tried everything in his powers to get the UAE back in the game.

The Asian Football Confederation has launched an investigation into the throwing of objects, including a barrage of sandals, at Qatar players during Tuesday's Asian Cup semi-final against United Arab Emirates in Abu Dhabi.

The semi-finals of the AFC Asian Cup will be played over the course of two days on the 28th and the 29th of January.

Qatar's performance in the UAE is all the more remarkable given that they are not meant to be there.

Almoez Ali gave Qatar a 2-0 lead before the half-time break, and was met by missiles while celebrating with his teammates.

Qatar will be hosting the World Cup in 2022 - the first time it has ever been held in winter - and would be keen to go into that tournament as Asian Cup holders. When captain Hassan Al-Haydos made it three, he too was given the same treatment, as the visitors ran out as comfortable 4-0 winners.

There was enough time for Qatar to score a fourth against the 10 men of the UAE, as Hamid Ismail squeezed a shot under Essa.
