China has levied extra tariffs on US imports, including automobiles, in a blow to Tesla, which imports all light vehicles it sells in the market. The company had previously raised the prices of its two models by 20% in response to the 25% tariffs put in place by Beijing.
The company hopes that the discount will make its cars more affordable for Chinese consumers and help to boost sales.
Tesla warned last month it was facing major problems with selling cars in China due to new tariffs that would force it to accelerate investment in its first overseas Gigafactory in Shanghai.
The US carmaker said on Thursday that it is cutting the prices of its Model S sedan and the Model X SUV in China by 12 per cent to 26 per cent.
