Mexico soccer stalwart Rafael Marquez was sanctioned Wednesday by the United States Department of the Treasury for his alleged support of a drug trafficking organization.

Marquez, who now plays for Liga MX club Atlas and has played for Barcelona as well as several clubs in Mexico and for the New York Red Bulls in MLS, was cited as having a long-time relationship with Flores Hernandez.

The sanctions are the result of a lengthy investigation of the drug trafficking organisation allegedly headed by Raul Flores Hernandez.

He was a young star for the Atlas club before moving to Monaco in 1999. Julion Alvarez is considered one of Mexico's most famous singers in the banda music genre and is known for praising the drug trafficking lifestyle in his music.

Mexico's Federal Soccer Association didn't immediately have a comment and calls to a soccer school run by Marquez went unanswered.

Flores Hernandez allegedly operated independently in the northern city of Guadalajara, but maintained alliances with the Sinaloa and Jalisco New Generation cartels.

Marquez, along with a popular singer known as Julion Alvarez and almost two dozen other Mexican nationals, is accused of financial ties with Raul Flores Hernandez, a suspected drug trafficker with links to the Sinaloa cartel and the Jalisco New Generation gang. The sanctions will block access to any assets held in the USA and block US citizens from doing business with the named subjects.

Washington sanctioned Raul Flores Hernandez and his drug cartel, the Flores Drug Trafficking Organization, along with 21 other Mexican nationals, including a professional football player, Rafael Marquez Alvarez, and a singer, Julio Cesar Alvarez Montelongo, and 42 entities connected to the narcotics trade, according to official statement, APA reports quoting sputniknews.
