A political slugfest broke out between the Congress and the ruling BJP after Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi's vehicle was on Friday stoned and windows broken by hostile black flag-waving crowds during his tour of a flood-hit town in the state's Banaskantha district.

Condemning the "reprehensible" act, Congress spokesman Abhishek Manu Singhvi told reporters here that Rahul's entourage was attacked with cement bricks by "BJP goons and anti-social elements" when it was passing from Lal Chowk of Dhaneri village.

Gandhi was on a day-long visit to the flood-affected regions of north Gujarat.

"We have lodged a complaint of "murderous assault" against four BJP workers, but the police has not registered an FIR so far", Surjewala said. But the six Congress MLAs - Mahesh Patel, Govabhai Rabari, Kantibhai Kharadi, Jayantibhai Patel, Manibhai Vaghela, and Dharshibhai Khanpura - are holed up in a Karanataka resort, to safeguard a Rajya Sabha seat for party leader Ahmed Patel. "He even met unknown people on the way".

But if PSG is able to do this, why not? 'Now for us its very important to try to improve our squa - in the numerical aspect - we have a small squad, ' said Conte.

"With 218 deaths in Gujarat, 61 in Bansakanta alone, Prime Minister (Narendra Modi) only does an aerial visit while CM takes five days to visit". He later proceeded on a visit of flood-hit villages of Banaskantha district.

Indirectly referring to Prime Minister, Rahul said, "Why the one, who has done this, would condemn the incident?"

Yesterday, the Congress vice president had tweeted: "Narendra Modi ji, slogans, black flags and stones will not deter us.We will put in all our might into the service of people".

The BJP, however, said it was an unfortunate incident and the party had no role to play in it. Don't call public of this country as rowdy elements, people who are suffering from floods, people who are exhausted of this kind of politics that Rahul Gandhi and his party are doing. "This is being deliberately done by the BJP to create an atmosphere of fear in the state of Gujarat just before the Assembly election", the senior Congress leader had said.
