President Donald Trump tweeted that Ret. Gen. John Kelly is the new White House chief of staff, replacing Reince Priebus in the role.
Then the president tweeted about Priebus' future saying, "I would like to thank Reince Priebus for his service and dedication to his country".
Priebus traveled with Trump earlier in the day to an appearance in Brentwood, New York.

Trump has a thing for generals, and it's not surprising that he gravitates toward Kelly in particular. He's a great, great American.
His press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said Thursday that she did not know if Trump "has an opinion on what" should happen between Priebus and Scaramucci.
Kelly even defended efforts by top White House advisor Jared Kushner, Trump's son-in-law, to create secret back-channel communications with Russian Federation as a "good thing".
Priebus tells CNN that he resigned on Thursday.
That left Priebus with the blame for numerous administration's legislative stumbles, including the arduous attempts at passing a bill to repeal and replace Obamacare - which Priebus had advised Trump to make his first legislative priority, promising him swift victory.

Liberals, said there will be a meeting of the party executive within 28 days to set a date and plan for a leadership vote. Former British Columbia premier Christy Clark will resign as leader of the provincial Liberal party.

Yet Priebus's dismissal capped a tumultuous six months marked by staff turmoil and political reversals that Trump often blamed on his chief of staff.
Priebus is the second major figure associated with the Republican establishment to be purged by the unpopular Trump as he appears to be blaming everyone but himself for his inability to convince America to back his presidency or agenda.
He added, " I think Reince is doing a great job as chief of staff".
Anthony Scaramucci threatened to fire the entire department in the rant during a phone call to a reporter, which included an attack on Reince Priebus and Chief Strategist Stephen Bannon.
No formal announcement has been made about whether or not Priebus resigned or was sacked from the position. "Reince is a good man", POTUS said.
Kelly has, however, clashed with congressional Democrats in recent months because he has indicated the Trump administration was unlikely to continue the Obama-era DACA program that protects certain eligible youth from deportation if they were brought to the US illegally by their parents. This bluster is undoubtedly why Trump hired Kelly and brought him over to the White House.
In a typical White House, most staffers, including the communications director, report to the chief of staff.
"He has served the president and the American people capably and passionately", House of Representatives Speaker Paul Ryan said of his close friend in a statement.
