Abdullah also cited a previous incident that outraged Jordanians, in which a Jordanian judge was shot in March 2014 by an Israeli soldier at a border crossing.

Also on Monday, the security guard and other diplomats flew home after Amman investigators heard "his account of the incident" at the Israeli embassy compound, a Jordanian government source said.

Responding to public anger that the security guard was able to leave Jordan, Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi said the Israeli had been protected by diplomatic immunity, but he vowed to "get justice" for the victims of what he called a "criminal attack".

The Israeli was in "unstable" condition, the new site said.

"This protest is for our dignity", said Raeda Kashef, a 50-year-old housewife.

The Jordanian bystander appeared to have been killed accidentally, an official told Reuters.

The gesture of "close cooperation" was acknowledged by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who expressed gratitude to U.S. President Donald Trump, his son-in-law Jared Kushner and even Jordan's King Abdullah.

Jawawdah's father stated that his son was no "trouble-maker or a terrorist" and had made his way to Israel's embassy to deliver furniture. "I want to know how the investigation is going and know what happened and what led to the killing of my son".

Thousands turned out to Jawawdeh's funeral in Amman on Tuesday, carrying pictures of the teenager with Palestinian and Jordanian flags, chanting "Death to Israel". It has always been a flashpoint of anti-Israeli protests at times of turmoil in the Palestinian territories.

The guard's reception in Israel obviously rankled Jordanians, with protests launched in various cities in the country.

Violence against Israelis is rare in Jordan, a tightly policed country that is a staunch regional ally of the United States.

He told The Jordan Times on Wednesday that Israel "could have at least showed respect and appreciation for the Jordanian position, and for the family of the victims, by receiving the diplomat in silence".
