Police said later in the day that discretion could be applied in the use of the metal detectors instead of forcing everyone to go through them.

He deplored Israel's continued crimes against Palestinians, adding hat the Palestinian Resistance groups will not remain handcuffed towards continuous crimes against Al-Aqsa Mosque by the Zionist regime.

"Now this movement to destroy the al-Aqsa compound is positioned as the tip of the spear in the Zionist project, in Israeli society, against Palestinians", he added.

Crowds gathered outside Jerusalem's Old City found shops closed and streets around Damascus Gate - the entrance most heavily used by Palestinians - blocked.

On Friday, the highlight of the Muslim religious week, Israeli police severely restricted Muslim access to the Old City to prevent mass protests.

The recent protests revolve around the introduction of metal detectors by Israel at the entrances to the sacred Temple Mount compound.

A top adviser to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas said they are holding a series of consultations with various countries to try and lower tensions in Jerusalem.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has urged Israel to remove the detectors.

According to his Facebook posts and statements from his family, al-Abed was reportedly angry over the loss of Palestinian lives and wanted to protect the honor of the Jerusalem holy site at the heart of the latest tensions between Palestinians and the Israel.
