Redskins QB Kirk Cousins unlikely to sign deal by Monday deadline

As the hours and seconds tick away on an impending long-term contract between quarterback Kirk Cousin and the Washington Redskins, most fans have come to grips that, realistically, a deal will not be consummated.

Cousins is now scheduled to make $23.9 million in 2017 under the franchise tag, per Spotrac, but could then hit free agency after the season.

Should the Redskins place an unfathomable third consecutive franchise tag on Cousins in 2018, the team would be on the hook to pay the former Michigan State star upward of $34 million in guaranteed salary. The 49ers are the rumored landing spot for Cousins if the above scenario plays out. The 49ers could have a quarterback vacancy next season. Whatever, the case, though, Washington not getting a deal done before Monday opens the door for the Niners if they wan to walk through it.

Meanwhile, no deals are close for Steelers running back Le'Veon Bell and Rams cornerback Trumaine Johnson, the other two franchised players who have yet to agree to long-term contracts.

The Washington Redskins and Kirk Cousins will complete their contract dance Monday, though depending on the results, the music may start again in less than six months.

The 49ers and new coach Kyle Shanahan, of course, have always been linked to Cousins given their history in Washington, and San Francisco also has a glaring need for a long-term fix at quarterback.

Shanahan helped develop Cousins into one of the league's top up-and-coming quarterbacks. If they can not, the negotiation window doesn't open again until after the coming season. For at least one more year.

Washington also could transition him for $28,732,320 million, but another team would have the ability to sign him to an offer sheet that Washington would then have seven days to match.
