The FBI's Boston office confirmed on Friday that the remains found Thursday, buried in the back of a North Dartmouth property, belonged to Donald Eugene Webb.
MA state police detectives obtained a search warrant as part of a separate investigation that led to the discovery of Webb's body on the North Dartmouth property, 28 Maplecrest Drive.
The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner of MA determined that Webb died approximately 17 years ago.
The remains might be Webb, who is a long time fugitive wanted for the murder of Adams.
Investigators believe Adams shot Webb in the leg before he sped away from the deadly traffic stop December 4, 1980.
Last month the Federal Bureau of Investigation issued new photos and offered a $100,000 reward for information on Webb's whereabouts. He disappeared after that attack.
"For nearly 37 years, the family of Chief Adams, and the citizens of Saxonburg have been awaiting news of Donald Eugene Webb's whereabouts". "The FBI is grateful to have been able to play a role in helping to resolve this case".
Gains modest but Dow logs high
Benchmark U.S. crude gained 59 cents, or 1.3 percent, to settle at $46.08 per barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. Target climbed 2.28 percent after it raised its second-quarter forecasts and said sales and customer traffic grew.
Butler, Pa. County District Attorney Richard Goldinger said in an e-mail that he did not expect anyone to face criminal charges.
There was a $100,000 reward for information leading to his capture.
Webb is the man accused of killing the Saxonburg police chief in 1980.
Jones said she wants to know how Donald Webb managed to evade arrest after her husband's murder. "As I've said, this is ongoing".
After the believed-to-be remains were found, she said: "until positive identification has been made, no further comment will be made at this time".
The FBI and state police from Massachusetts and Pennsylvania made the discovery while digging behind the property in North Dartmouth, Massachusetts, on Thursday. "I think it means a lot to all officers". Jones said. "Do they have to hide it after he's dead, so that we still get no justice?"
Police have discovered what appeared to be human remains behind a home with connections to the decades-old, unsolved slaying of a Pennsylvania police chief, authorities said. Our thoughts are with the family and we hope this eases their minds, if even only slightly.
